Sex Education: How important is sex education for children?

Sex Education is very important for making teenagers aware during adolescence. At the onset of puberty, they experience various physical changes, and along with that, curiosity arises in them about relationships and sexuality. Through sex education, their curiosity is addressed, and they become more aware of sexuality. On this subject, relationship counselor and sexuality educator Jaya Jaiswal has shared her views.

According to her, this education should begin in early childhood. Children need to be made aware of the Difference Between Safe and Unsafe Touch. For protecting children from sexual abuse, this must be considered an essential step for parents.

A child’s first learning begins at home, so it is the parents’ responsibility to answer their curiosity. But when sensitive questions about sexuality come from children, many parents struggle to respond. Many people still do not feel comfortable talking about sex. Jaya Jaiswal pointed out that often parents do not take children’s words seriously in early childhood. If a child appears quiet or sad, it is often dismissed as a normal reaction. In many cases, children face abuse at home or from known people. Even if they try to share this with parents, their words are often ignored. As a result, children feel afraid to speak, and a sense of guilt develops in them. This guilt later negatively affects their personal lives.

The only solution to this problem is communication. Parents must talk to children and verify the truth of their words. From an early age, children should be taught not to be forced into anything, but instead to make their own decisions.

Another important aspect of sex education is awareness about various sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Due to a lack of awareness, many people face sexual health issues, primarily STDs and STIs. In cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune, 70% of young men and women are affected by STDs and STIs, mainly due to having multiple sexual partners. To avoid these diseases, one should use protection during intercourse. If a person has multiple sexual partners, it is important to get tested by STI specialists.

Every individual needs to receive sex education. Parents should overcome social taboos and superstitions around sexuality and teach their children about it. This will help create awareness regarding sexual health and well-being.
