In the heart of Howrah's Ramrajatala lies a shrine veiled in history and devotion—the Ram Temple. With its origins dating back nearly three centuries, this architectural marvel has captured the imagination of devotees across India. Constructed around 300 years ago by the affluent zamindar Ayodhya Ram Chowdhury, the Ram Temple stands as a testament to timeless faith and craftsmanship. However, its journey began amidst controversy as locals harboured conflicting sentiments over its purpose.
Originally intended as a place of worship for Goddess Saraswati, the temple sparked debates within the community. Some resisted the idea of Ram worship at the site, leading to prolonged deliberations. Eventually, a consensus emerged to enshrine the idols of Lord Ram and Goddess Saraswati side by side, symbolising harmony between faiths.
Every year, during the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, special ceremonies are held to consecrate the idols of Ram and Sita. The temple witnesses a flurry of activities during this period, culminating in the immersion of the idols at the end of the festivities.
Beyond its religious significance, the Ram Temple serves as a beacon of community service. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, daily rituals and prayers continue unabated, offering solace to devotees in troubled times.
Opening its doors promptly at 8:30 AM and closing at 9:00 PM, the temple follows a strict schedule, except on special occasions when it remains open throughout the day. Full moon days are particularly auspicious, marked by elaborate ceremonies and celebrations.
Visitors flock to the temple from far and wide, drawn not only by religious fervor but also by the allure of Ram Mela, a vibrant fair held for four months surrounding the temple premises. The fair, accompanied by the darshan of Lord Ram, attracts devotees in droves, creating an atmosphere of joy and spirituality.
To reach the temple, one can alight at Howrah Ramrajatala Station and embark on a short walk to its hallowed grounds. Alternatively, buses from Howrah or Santragachi can drop passengers at Santaragachi More or Janagate, from where the temple is just a stone's throw away.
In essence, the Ram Temple at Ramrajatala stands as a testament to unity in diversity, blending religious traditions seamlessly while offering solace and sanctuary to all who seek it. As the sun sets on another day of worship, the temple remains a timeless symbol of devotion and reverence.
