Waste Segregation In 20 Wards In Kolkata

A waste segregation is set to be launched at source in 20 city wards by the state civic body. The volume of waste will be significantly reduced by the segregation and this is the first tentative step towards a more scientific handling of municipal solid waste. Currently, the solid waste is a mixture of household green waste, hazardous materials and even recyclables. And the toxic chemicals that are being released from the disintegration of the mixed waste cause long term damage to the city environment and residents’ health. All the citizens need to be more conscious of the environmental condition and the scheme of segregation is a great way to contribute to the cause. Each household in the ward will be handed out two waste bins, green and white as per the plan. The green bin will be demarcated for biodegradable wastes like vegetable peels, paper etc. And the white bin will be used for hazardous and non-biodegradable wastes like plastics, tetra packs etc. Wastes from the green bin will go into production of fertilizer, and white bin wastes will be taken to small industries. And the waste will be collected by the KMC conservatory staff.
