Tragic demise of musician Kalikaprasad in car accident

7th March left the film and music industry shell shocked at the sudden demise of Dohar's frontman and noted singer Kalikaprasad Bhattacharjee. It is reported that the car was speeding at 90 km/hr when a tyre burst, leading to collision with a culvert and thereafter rolling over and falling into the Nayanjuli river in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, which led to his death. Six other band members of Dohaar, who were also travelling with him in the car, were immediately admitted to the Bardhaman Medical Hospital for treatment. Kalikaprasad was declared dead on arrival while conditions of others continue to remain extremely critical.

Kalikaprasad Bhattacharya was known for popularising folk songs from rural Bengal. He had also sung for Bengali films like Moner Manush, Jaatishwar and Bhuban Majhi.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Shocked at the tragic demise of Kalikaprasad Bhattacharjee of Dohar. His passing is a big loss to Bengali music.”

Condolences poured in from the music industry. “I wish this news you have given were not true,” said singer-music composer Shantanu Moitra.

Singer Subha Mudgal tweeted, “Deeply saddened to hear that Kalikaprasad Bhattacharjee/Kalika da passed away in a road accident. I mourn with his friends and family.”

Superstar Prosenjit Chaterjee tweeted “Can’t believe Kalikaprasad is no more with us because of a horrible car accident. Is destiny playing with us? RIP dear”.
