Snake awareness in secondary curriculum

In order to educate students and make them aware of different types of snakes and how to react at the sight of the reptile and their role in protecting bio-diversity, the West Bengal government has decided to introduce a special chapter on snakes in the secondary school curriculum from the next academic session. The special chapter on the reptile will contain details about venomous and non-venomous snakes, their scientific and common names and how one should react if a snake is seen in the neighbourhood or in bushes. This chapter will be introduced in subject ‘Life Science’ for students of class 8 in the secondary school system. Abhik Majumder, Chairman of Syllabus Committee of the secondary school curriculum, said, "We think introducing a chapter on snakes will serve the purpose of educating students and their parents about the different types of snakes, the role of snakes in protecting our bio-diversity, and preventive measures to stop the killing of the reptiles, including venomous ones".
