Sister Nivedita University took the lead in ushering in the winter festivities by organising the first-ever Poush Mela celebration on its campus. The three-day event, held from January 13th to 15th, transformed the university into a vibrant cultural hub, extending the Poush Mela tradition beyond Shantiniketan to various corners of Kolkata.
From Baul songs to captivating live graffiti, Rabindrasangeet, Padabali Kirtan, folk dances, and delectable Pitha-Puli, the event encompassed a diverse range of cultural performances. The festivities not only delighted the senses but also left a lasting impression on the hearts of all attendees.
The inaugural ceremony on January 13th saw the presence of eminent personalities, including the university's Vice-Chancellor Dr. Dhruvajyoti Chatterjee, renowned actor Bivas Chakraborty, Dr. Barun Kumar Chakraborty, dancer Amita Dutta, literary figure Prachet Gupta, Swami Gyanlokananda Maharaj, Baul maestro Purna Das Baul, director Gautam Ghosh, and musician Shantanu Roy Chaudhuri.
Reflecting on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Dhruvajyoti Chatterjee expressed joy, saying, "Hosting this traditional fair fills us with happiness. 130 years ago, Rabindranath Tagore initiated the Poush Mela, and we aspire to see SNU celebration continue for centuries."
The festival radiated its charm across the Sister Nivedita University campus, with students from the Fine Arts department crafting a 25-foot masterpiece that became a focal point of the Mela.
In collaboration with the West Bengal government, 37 stalls were set up, offering a wide array of delights, from traditional Pitha-Puli to handcrafted artifacts. The festival lit up the New Town campus grounds daily from 3 PM to 8 PM, creating a vibrant atmosphere that captivated visitors.
This inaugural Poush Mela at Sister Nivedita University not only celebrated tradition but also marked a new chapter in Kolkata's cultural landscape, showcasing the spirit of unity and festivity in the city.
