Roads to be repaired before monsoon

Ahead of the setting in of Monsoons, senior officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) instructed city engineers a thorough repair of damaged roads.

The marathon meetings with officials and engineers which began on Tuesday at Nabanna Sabhaghar will continue till Thursday. On Tuesday, PWD minister Arup Biswas and PWD secretary Arnab Roy met executive engineers, superintending engineers and chief engineers of north Bengal.

Sources said that the under-construction bridges, roads and buildings of north Bengal was discussed elaborately and the minister took stock of the progress of work. A list of roads which needed immediate attention, was also prepared.

It was decided that all potholes would need to be filled in before the rains and the work of roads which had begun would need to be completed before October 2, ahead of Durga Puja.

A software has been prepared where the status of work needed to be uploaded after every 15 days. All the bridges and flyovers need to get regular maintenance and for that executive engineers would need to be kept in-charge of specific bridges and flyovers and they would submit reports about the condition of structures after every three months. There should not be any loophole in the process and if anything happens to a particular bridge or flyover, the respective executive engineer would be held responsible.

It was also decided that once a road was built, the construction company building it would take care of its maintenance for the next five years. If the surface breaks or potholes appear within that time, they need to repair it and if they dont, strict action would be taken against the company.

Biswas also gave strict instructions that work of buildings that are in progress needed to be completed within two years.

On Wednesday the minister and secretary will meet executive engineers, superintending engineers and chief engineers of south zone and on Thursday they will meet those of west zone.
