Rare Disease Awareness Event Hosted By The Institute Of Child Health On Wednesday

Amidst the ongoing medical advancements, there's still a stage where struggles persist. Every year, the Institute of Child Health takes a pioneering step forward to address these challenges, aiming to revolutionise the care of children.

Their message resonates loud and clear: these children are not just different from society; they're an integral part of it. This sentiment echoed profoundly during the commemoration of "Rare Disease Day" on February 28th.

In an evening filled with dance, poetry, and theatre, the Children's Little Theatre in Dhakuria, Kolkata, turned into a cultural hub, hosting the annual event "aloker ei jharna dharay," organised by the Institute of Child Health (ICH).

From Down syndrome to autism, dyslexia, and spinal atrophy, the spectrum of rare diseases found expression through various performances. Nearly 20 children, grappling with different conditions, danced to the rhythm of diverse melodies at Park Circus Hospital. Additionally, the Mridalini Centre for Cancer Research showcased the play "Bango Ma-Bango Mi," featuring around 10 patients under treatment.

Renowned musician Babul Supriyo graced the occasion, adding a touch of melody and motivation.

The chairman and chief administrator of the hospital emphasised that the responsibility of these ailing children doesn't solely rest upon their parents but extends to every member of society. He stressed the urgent need for awareness, pointing out that, despite being afflicted with rare diseases, many children suffer due to a lack of societal understanding.

Moreover, Dr. Joydeb Roy, President of ICH, highlighted the substantial financial burden rare diseases pose on families, often pushing them to the brink. Hence, the event also served as a platform to appeal for financial assistance, ensuring no child and their family face this battle alone.

Apurbo Roy's poignant reminder that "the responsibility for these children lies with everyone in society" resonates deeply, calling upon governmental support to step up in providing financial aid.

In a heartening development, Rupankar Bagchi, a renowned singer, volunteered to perform at the event without remuneration, emphasising solidarity in the face of adversity.

The event not only shed light on the plight of these children but also underscored the imperative need for societal empathy and support. As we move forward, let us not forget these resilient souls and extend a helping hand wherever possible, ensuring that no child's struggle goes unnoticed or unassisted.
