The Rajdhani Express embarked on its maiden voyage on March 1st, 1969, revolutionising train travel in India. Before its introduction, trains in India averaged a speed of 96 kilometres per hour. However, with the Rajdhani Express, travellers could cover a distance of 1445 kilometres from Delhi to Howrah in just over 17 hours, setting a new benchmark in speed and comfort.

At the time of its inception, the Rajdhani Express boasted nine coaches, including AC chair cars, an AC dining car, and a first-class car. These coaches were manufactured at a premier factory in Perambur. Over the years, with advancements in technology and changing passenger needs, the Rajdhani Express has evolved to meet modern standards while retaining its timeless appeal.
