On Thursday, September 7th, 2023, a 'test train' embarked on a historic journey, crossing the Padma River from Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka to Bhanga Railway Station in Faridpur District in just 8 minutes. This remarkable achievement heralds a new era of railway transportation in the region.

Beginning on October 10th, 2023, regular train services will commence on this route, with Bangladesh's Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, set to inaugurate this groundbreaking railway. The symbolic crossing of the Padma River by the test train on September 7th marked a pivotal moment in the project's timeline.

Among those who experienced this transformative journey were several notable dignitaries, including Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan, Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, former minister Shah Jahan Khan, and State Minister for Shipping Enamul Haque Shamim. Journalists also joined the voyage, documenting this historic milestone.

This remarkable railway project, expected to be fully operational by June 2024, extends the railway track from Dhaka to Jashore, covering a distance of 172 kilometres over the Padma Bridge. Initially, train services will operate on an 82-kilometre track from Dhaka to Bhanga. The eventual extension to Jashore will connect India via Benapole, fostering closer ties and improved communication between these two neighbouring nations.

Following the grand inauguration by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, commercial train services are anticipated to commence approximately a week later. Moreover, project planners are considering the possibility of expanding train routes to include the Dhaka-Padma River-Rajbari route, further enhancing regional connectivity.

This monumental railway project not only fulfils the dreams of those in South Bengal but also promises to reshape regional transportation, offering efficiency, speed, and picturesque views along the way. As this project advances, it holds the potential to strengthen ties between Bangladesh and India, ushering in a new era of connectivity and collaboration.
