Number of endangered Rhinos goes up in Bengal

The latest census report which was released by the State Forest minister Bratya Basu recently at Sukna in Siliguri shows that the population of one-horned rhinoceros has grown significantly in Jaldapara and Gorumara in North Bengal. The total count of the endangered animal which is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List has gone up to 291, which is being considered as a healthy growth in numbers. In Gorumara, the population of this animal species has gone up from 49 to 52, whereas in Jaldaparait went up from 204 to 239. The growth is quite significant in comparison to the last census report which came out in 2015. A senior official of the State Forest department said, "This is for the first time when apart from direct sighting we have collected the dung of the animal to estimate the population. Both the reports have been tallied and the census report was released accordingly. Apart from our officials, adequate number of forest guards, 18 pet elephants were involved in the count. There were some NGOs too, as observers during the census process". These samples of the dung have also been sent to Hyderabad for DNA analysis to figure out the correct figure of the male and female rhinos in the two national parks. The growth in population of these endangered species clearly indicates that the initiatives for improving its habitat and preventing poaching were carried out perfectly.
