Maa Flyover likely to get a third ramp

After the inauguration of the second ramp of Maa Flyover which has eased Alipore-bound traffic from EM Bypass, the West Bengal government is mulling on adding another ramp to the flyover.

This one will take a diversion on Syed Amir Ali Avenue and end near Ballygunge Phari. Sources said that a study report is being prepared for this two-lane ramp by RITES, an engineering consultancy company specialising in the field of transport infrastructure, under the aegis of Indian Railways.

The study report is scheduled to be submitted by the end of this month after which a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared.

State urban development minister and mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said that after the new ramp is constructed commuters from EM Bypass towards Ballygunge and Jadavpur would be immensely benefitted. He said that at present those who intend to take that route disembark at the Park Circus seven-point crossing and take a left turn which causes some traffic logjam.

he said,

The new ramp has been planned to avoid that bottleneck,

Once the DPR is cleared, work is scheduled to begin after the general elections and officials said that the ramp would take about two years to complete.

Although Maa Flyover had been conceptualised during the time of the Left Front government but owing to different technicalities including land acquisition near No 4 Bridge work was halted. After the BJP government came to power in 2014 the project under the JNNURM was shelved after a part of the money was paid. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not give in to the setback and decided that the state would construct the flyover out of its own money. After that Hindustan Construction Company started building the flyover.

While it was initially named Parama Flyover, Mamata rechristened it as Maa Flyover and inaugurated its first phase from EM Bypass to Park Circus seven-point crossing. After that, a ramp was made to connect Maa Flyover from AJC Bose Road Flyover which eased traveling from Race Course Ground to EM Bypass. Later construction of a second ramp to join the Maa Flyover an AJC Bose Road flyover passing through Congress Exhibition Road. Now the third ramp will further expand the flyover easing traffic movement and avoiding the bottleneck at the seven-point crossing.
