Kolkata's Metro Adventure Begins Beneath The Ganges ! Prime Minister Inaugurates Three New Metro Routes Today

After decades of anticipation, Kolkata's wait has finally ended as the city witnesses a historic moment with the inauguration of three new metro routes by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The city's love affair with the metro, which began in 1984, takes a significant leap forward as the trains now embark on an unprecedented journey beneath the mighty Ganga.

Today, March 6, marks the inauguration of the East-West Metro route's Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section, a milestone that Prime Minister Modi himself graced with his presence. But that's not all; two more metro routes saw the light of day under his auspices: the New Garia-Airport untill Ruby and Joka-Taratala untill Majherhat routes, adding 5.4 kilometres and 1.25 kilometres to Kolkata's metro network, respectively.

As the sun rose, the Esplanade station bustled with anticipation, hosting a gathering in the presence of the governor, Subhendu Adhikary, and Sukanta Majumder. Amidst the waving of green flags, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the metro route.

After the inauguration, he first boarded the metro from Esplanade. School students accompanied him on his journey. He travelled under the Ganga iver. After that, he returned on the same route. Two phases of the East-West Metro became operational as a result.

The underwater metro promises a unique experience, with trains gliding beneath the river's surface, offering commuters a surreal view of the Ganges. Although these routes are not yet open to the public, the hope lingers that in the coming days, ordinary citizens will also enjoy this remarkable feat of engineering.

In addition to easing commuters' woes, these new metro routes hold the promise of transforming Kolkata's transportation landscape, connecting distant corners of the city, and paving the way for future expansions. Rumour has it that the entire East-West Metro route, spanning from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, might open its doors by June or July next year, marking yet another milestone in Kolkata's metro odyssey.

As Kolkata embraces this new chapter in its transportation saga, the echoes of excitement reverberate through its streets, heralding a future where the city's heartbeat pulses beneath the Ganges, fueled by the relentless spirit of progress and innovation.
