Kolkata has emerged as the safest city in India, according to the recently released 2022 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. With a population exceeding 20 million and over 80 police stations under its jurisdiction, Kolkata has demonstrated a significant decline in crime rates over the past three years.
The NCRB report reveals that Kolkata boasts an impressive record, with only 86.5 crimes per lakh of population deemed cognizable and worthy of investigation. This places the city ahead of Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai, which secured the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively, in terms of safety.
Delving into the statistics, the report indicates a substantial improvement in Kolkata's crime rates compared to the previous years. In 2021, the city reported a crime rate of 103.5 per lakh population, marking a noteworthy decrease from 159.6 in 2016.
The report's findings have not only solidified Kolkata's position as the safest city in India for the third consecutive year but also highlighted the city's ongoing commitment to maintaining law and order. Currently, Kolkata has 83 police stations, including nine dedicated to women's safety, two cybercrime units, and an STF centre.
In response to the encouraging news, a former minister expressed satisfaction, citing the NCRB report, which indicates that Kolkata has the lowest crime rate among major cities in the country. The contrast with Delhi, where the crime rate stands at 1952.5% per lakh population, emphasises Kolkata's exceptional safety standards.
However, while Kolkata demonstrates a decline in crime, the nationwide scenario reveals a reduction in crimes against women. The report indicates a disturbing rise in atrocities against women, with cases involving harassment of spouses and relatives accounting for the majority. The figures show a significant 31.4% increase in such cases in 2022 compared to the previous year.
In total, the year 2022 recorded 4,45,256 cases of crimes against women, a slight increase from 2021. This underscores the need for continued efforts to address and combat gender-based violence in the city and across the nation.
