Kolkata, often dubbed the 'City of Joy,' has added another feather to its cap by unveiling its own version of Piccadilly Circus. However, this isn't London, but the heart of Kolkata itself.
The Esplanade Metro Station, a vital hub in the city's metro network, has undergone a remarkable transformation. It now stands as a dazzling junction, connecting the East-West Metro project's Bowbazar-Vipti stretch with the planned route to Howrah Maidan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the East-West Metro, or the Howrah Maidan to Esplanade Metro service, on March 6th. According to metro sources, the station sits a remarkable 27 metres below ground level, enhancing its grandeur and efficiency.
Designed with two entry and exit paths—one leading towards KC Das Square and the other towards Curzon Park—the station boasts 16 ticket counters, 20 escalators, 12 staircases, and 8 elevators. With three platforms in operation, it features 16 AFC gates and restroom facilities for commuters.
The Esplanade Metro Station isn't just a transportation hub; it's a gateway to Kolkata's bustling Central Business District and beyond. According to metro spokesperson Kaushik Mitra, it promises seamless connectivity, enabling commuters to traverse the city and its suburbs effortlessly.
With the introduction of modern ticketing systems, such as the speculated integration of ticketing via mobile apps like WhatsApp, the station exemplifies Kolkata's stride towards technological advancement in public transportation.
