Kathalaguri Tea Garden In Dooars Was Officially Inaugurated On Sunday

On July 9, the newly constructed tea factory at Kathalaguri Tea Garden in Dooars was officially inaugurated.

Kathalaguri Tea Garden was shut down in 2002 for a number of different reasons. Following that, the tea garden was shut down for eight years in a row.

At that time, Kathalguri's starving workers’ stories were spread across the country. Kathalguri also exceeded the misery of hungry people from Kalahandi, Amlashol, and Dhekalapara.
The labourers were surviving by eating various tubers and inedible substances found in the forest, such as ‘dhaki shak’ and ‘munta shak’. According to unofficial estimates, around 1,200 workers lost their lives.

In 2010, the garden was reopened. Although there was no factory, the raw tea leaves produced in the garden had been sold elsewhere for several years.

After 13 years, a new factory has reopened near the tea garden, and from now on, tea will be freshly brewed here again with raw leaves from the garden.

The tea Garden's owner, Ramavatar Berolia, inaugurated the factory. Tenzing Bhutia, OC Chamurchi Outpost, Debjyoti Sarkar, and representatives of the Tea Garden Management Authority were also present on the day of the inauguration.

The garden's owner said that restarting the factory could create several kinds of difficulties for the workers. The workers were also delighted when the factory opened.
