Kalighat temple to undergo makeover

The Kalighat temple is going to undergo a thorough makeover soon, reported Urban Development Minister and Mayor Firhad Hakim during his speech at the Legislative Assembly. The temple premises would be beautified and the adjacent areas would be given a new look. A skywalk, like the one installed at Dakshineshwar will be constructed here as well. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has already started the ground work and has done a detailed survey of the underground utilities in the area before the makeover work starts. The detailed report of the beautification project is yet to be chalked out. The Mayor Firhad Hakim has conducted meetings with representatives of Kalighat temple committee to chalk out the beautification process. Hakim also had discussions with the hawker union leaders of the area since the stalls which are currently set up inside the temple premises will have to be shifted out temporarily during the beautification work takes place. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s Civil Engineering Department has constructed stalls outside the temple premises for these hawkers for a smooth beautification process. The corporation’s work is scheduled to start by the first week of July, after the hawkers are shifted from inside the temple premises. The hawkers will return to their original stalls after the beautification process is over. However, the municipal corporation has reported that no changes would be made in the basic structure of the temple and none of the hawkers will be evicted.
