Indian Railway Pantry car meals on long-distance trains are quite expensive. Meanwhile, only sleeper class and AC sleeper class passengers can order food from the pantry car. On the other hand, General compartment passengers have to carry their own food while travelling on the train; otherwise, they have to go down to the station and buy something. But the railway authorities, keeping this in mind, have launched the 'Economy Meal' Service for the passengers.

Currently, this 'Economy Meal' service has been launched at a total of 64 stations in the country. Out of this, 10 stations of the Northern Railway, 29 stations of the Eastern Railway, 3 stations of the South-Central Railway, 9 stations of the Southern Railway, and 13 stations of the Western Railway have been introduced.

Indian Railways will provide meals to the passengers of the general coaches through the service counters at the platforms at an affordable rate for the convenience of the passengers of these coaches, which are often overcrowded. The menu also has provisions for South Indian items.
According to the notice by the railway authorities, these foods will be served through extended service counters that will be situated on platforms aligned with general-class coaches.

By paying Rs 20, a passenger will get seven pooris with dry aloo and pickle. On the other hand, for Rs 50, it offers meals such as rice, rajma, chole, khichdi, chole-bhature, pao-bhaji, and masala dosa. A 200-ml drinking water bottle will cost only Rs 3 for the passengers, who have expressed satisfaction over the new arrangement.

At present, economy meals are available at several stations, including Jaipur, Mathura, Kharagpur, Katihar, Dhanbad, Rewari, Bilaspur, Bengaluru, Nagpur, Rajkot, Mumbai Central, and Rourkela, among others.

SCR General Manager Arun Kumar Jain said the provision of economy meals will be particularly useful to general passengers.
