His legs on field; his fan’s, on canvas

A small house in Panchantala of Howrah, nothing extraordinary, is inhabited by a veritable fighter. Ranjan Kurni has beat both poverty and physical disability to challenge life just like his football idol Messi challenges his opponents on the field. Unfortunately, things are totally down for Argentina this year but that doesn’t deter Kurmi from painting his idol’s portraits. While Messi is famous for his leg-magic, Kurmi also uses his legs, but for a different purpose altogether. He paints and draws with his toes. Kurni was born in a poverty-stricken family with two paralyzed arms that he could never use.

Hence, for survival, he learned how to use his legs as arms. Since childhood, he loves drawing portraits but he used to have no money to go to an art school, or at times, even for colour and canvas. Maybe, the unconquerable spirit of football players encouraged this fan to overcome his hardships.

Today he is a commercial artist and even runs a school in his house. With football fever all over Kolkata, his feet are busy drawing Messi’s picture in different styles.
