High Blood Pressure: Know the Silent Killer

Do you know that one in five Indians gets affected by high blood pressure or hypertension? Unfortunately, most of the cases remain undetected until and unless they exhibit a few weird symptoms.

Unlike other diseases, blood pressure is known to all as the ‘silent killer’. There is a valid reason behind this. High blood pressure is a disease that affects the very lifestyle of its prey. This is, in fact, a matter of concern because you will hardly get the disease detected until and unless some massive changes occur inside your body.

High blood pressure can be associated with family history, excessive work pressure and mental stress. Most of the time there is no such identifiable cause but it leads to problems like diabetes, obesity, kidney problems and the like.

“In the remaining 5% of patients, there could be a treatable cause like sleep apnea, blockages in the kidney arteries, or small tumours in the abdomen (the condition is called Secondary Hypertension),” says Dr. Nihar Mehta, Consultant Cardiologist, Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre.

“The possible complications of hypertension are heart failure, coronary artery disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and peripheral arterial disease (PAD),” says Dr. Paritosh Bagel, Internal Medicine, SL Raheja Hospital.

Do you know that reducing dietary salt and weight loss can prevent the chances of hypertension? It is best to carry on with regular exercises and proper medicines to keep yourself fit and healthy.
