Heavy Rain on the Radar

The Calcutta Municipal Corporation’s drainage pumping stations at the Palmer Bridge and New Market recorded 36.1mm and 18 mm of rain respectively on Thursday. Central Calcutta was splashed by a spell of heavy rains in the afternoon while other parts of the city only got drizzles. The weather department said rainfall might pick up in the city, which was witnessing a dry spell with intermediate showers. Ultadanga received 14.2mm of rain and elsewhere varied from 1mm and 3mm.

The monsoon trough was passing over Balasore till Wednesday. On Thursday, it moved closed to Calcutta and was passing through Digha, 180km south of Calcutta. That is why the rainfall is likely to increase, said Sanjib Bandopadhyay, deputy director general, India Meteorological Department, Calcutta. The officials have clarified that the city would experience only a short-wet-spells over the next two days with intense rain.

“We expect a cyclonic circulation to form close to the city on Sunday… The city may witness heavy rain after that”, added Bandopadhyay.
