Green initiative at Fort William

Going green in today’s world goes beyond the traditional definition of recycling goods. It means to live in a way that is friendly to the environment and the earth as a whole. It would also mean contributing towards maintaining the natural ecological balance in the environment, and preserving the planet and its natural system and resources.

Fort William is one of the few green pockets in Kolkata and the entire Maidan area where it is located is rightly referred to as the lungs of the city.

In an attempt to reiterate the awareness about the environment, Project Go Green, Fort William was carried out by Headquarters Eastern Command, Kolkata, with a mission to preserve the iconic and heritage status of Fort William.

Under this project, Greenathon 2019 was organised on April 5, for all families residing within Fort William. The event included distribution of posters and banners related to eco friendliness to participants followed by a 5 km awareness walk in the Fort William premises. Children were found to be especially enthusiastic about the event. Souvenirs were also distributed to participants.

The awareness walk was flagged off by regional president of Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) Veena Naravane at 6 am. She also interacted with volunteers and impressed upon them about the importance of green environment. An awareness talk on ‘Effects of Pollution to our Environment and Health’ was also organised as a part of the event.

The Greenathon 2019 is an attempt to inculcate a sense of responsibility amongst the people about preserving the environment. Greenathon 2019 is a measure to etch the thought of ‘Earth Friendly Approach of Living’ in the hearts and minds of generations to come.
