Examination Mantra

“Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one” --Hans Selye

The session ending and Board examinations have taken a jubilant start. Exams are an opportunity to showcase what you know as well as how organized you are in recalling and presenting your thoughts. They also test your state of mind. Don't lose sight of the fact that there is life after exams. Exams are a crucial part of education and also the source of stress for many students. In order to avoid the crippling anxiety from these pesky evaluations, it is important to approach them with a clear mind and an understanding of how to deal with stressful situations more broadly. In most cases, exam stress is all in the mind, and mental discipline is a large part of what is needed to succeed.

Needless to say, this is the most stressful time of the year for students; with the fear of failure looming large over low achievers and anxiety of getting to the top rank for high achievers. However, a little bit of stress can be a good thing as it motivates you to put that extra bit of effort to achieve your goal. But exams can also make stress levels get out of hand which might thwart your best performance. Therefore one has to deal with it intelligently.

I am sure that you have been studying very hard and will perform well. There are countless tips and techniques that will help you perform well in your exams. I would like to share some last minute tips which will help you to breeze through your exams:

  1. It's natural to feel some exam stress but don't panic. Remain positive and cheerful always.
  2. Eat Healthy. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, do not skip breakfast and stay away from junk food.
  3. Regular moderate exercise will boost your energy and will help you sleep better. Fresh air helps to clear the mind.
  4. Be an active learner. Try to revise in an active way. Do not just read notes mechanically but make a list of key points. In the beginning, spend some time practicing past exam papers and answering questions within the allotted time. Find out the mistakes made by you and work on the correct solutions. Such practice will give you a good idea regarding the format of the exam, the type of questions you may get, and will get you into the habit of finishing your answers on time.
  5. Create mind maps which can help you summarize vital information from lectures and text books.

SOME DONTS

  1. Low motivation levels needs to be avoided at all costs;
  2. Too much competition among peers is unhealthy so you need to avoid it; also try to avoid comparisons with peers before the exams.
  3. While studying, try and avoid the various distractions which come in the form of your smartphone! Instead focus only on your studies.
  4. Avoid cramming the night before your exams as it will not help you to retain important information for sustained periods. Plan ahead to reduce pressure.
  5. Do not pull all nighters before exams. Depriving yourself of sleep does not allow your brain to move information from short-term memory to long-term memory and thus reduces your chances of remembering during the examination.

Admirable students will pause, reflect and choose a path that will help them overcome the impasse, instead of waiting for the wave to engulf them.

Your mantra for exam preparation should be "keep calm and carry on".

Life has only one rule – ‘never quit’

We wish you “BEST OF LUCK” for the forthcoming examinations. I hope you will work hard over the next few weeks and put your best foot forward in the upcoming session ending/ Board exams.
