When the East-West Metro embarks on its under-river journey, passengers can expect trains to run at a remarkable frequency of every 12 minutes. Initially, the service will be supported by two rakes operating from both sides. Additionally, the Sector Five Metro is set to debut in Howrah Maidan in June 2024, further enhancing the metro network.

The newly established Esplanade Metro line will comprise four key stations: Howrah Maidan, Howrah Station, Mahakaran, and Esplanade. This strategic positioning ensures that passengers in this region reap the benefits of improved transportation options. The decision to commence the Esplanade Metro from Howrah Maidan was prompted by pending work on the Bowbazar section, making Sealdah an impractical starting point. However, the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) has affirmed that the necessary work will be finalized by June 2024.

BK Srivastava, Managing Director of KMRCL, reassured the public that the work will progress swiftly, thanks to the application of modern ground-freezing methods. This approach ensures that the metro's movement will not encounter any hindrances. Previous announcements from the railways indicated a potential start of commercial services between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade by the end of 2023. Consequently, these two peripheral stations have been included in the temporary hardware and software matching process. The full service, connecting Sector Five to Howrah Maidan, is expected to follow once all operational issues are resolved.

Metro sources have confirmed that preparations are underway to launch the service between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade by December of this year. The route for this new metro line includes Howrah Maidan, Howrah, B.B.D. Bagh or Mahakaran, and Esplanade stations. Authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure passengers enjoy a seamless and modern travel experience, sparing them the inconveniences of relying on bus routes. A state-of-the-art system is in place, and special Revenue Kit software will be reinstalled to facilitate this transition. A thorough examination will be conducted, covering aspects such as fares and transportation. Overall, this development promises to bring a touch of modernity to Kolkata's transportation system, greatly benefiting its residents.
