Eminent Bengali singer Banasree Sengupta passes away

Renowned Bengali singer Banasree Sengupta, who enthralled people with her voice from the late 60s to the late 80s, passed away at a state run SSKM hospital after prolonged illness on 20th February. She was undergoing treatment for lung infection at the SSKM hospital for some time.

Soon after her death, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted saying: "Deeply saddened at the passing of legendary singer Banashree Sengupta. My condolence to her family and fans." Singer Indranil Sen, who is the minister of state for information and cultural affairs (I&CA), described her demise as a "great loss".

Among her hit songs are Aaj Bikeler Dake Tomar Chhithi Pelam, Amar Angey Jaley Rangmoshal, Chhi chhi Eki Kando Korechi, Dur Akashay Tomar Sur and Sundar Boney Sundari Gachh.

In recognition of her contribution to music, the West Bengal government bestowed the Sangeet Samman and the Mahasangeet Samman on Banasree Sengupta in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
