E-W Metro to resume tunnel work?

A tunnel boring machine (TBM) of the East West (E-W) Metro project was stuck under Nirmal Chandra Street after the project came to a halt following an incident of subsidence in Bowbazar area on August 31. The East West Metro project stopped after a tunnel boring machine digging one of the two tunnels for the East-West corridor had hit an aquifer under Bowbazar area on August 31 which triggered a large-scale subsidence due to which many buildings developed cracks and hundreds of residents of those buildings had to be relocated. The TBM which was digging the other tunnel too stopped operating after the incident and had been lying underground since then. It moved for the first time since the project came to a halt after Calcutta High Court gave permission to Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation to move the machine five metres for maintenance purposes. The Calcutta High Court has now ordered the East-West Metro authorities to seek permission from the state disaster management department in order to receive permissions for resuming the tunnel boring work between Bowbazar and Sealdah. The division bench of Chief Justice T.B.N. Radhakrishnan and Justice Arijit Banerjee asked Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC), the implementing agency for the East-West Metro to seek permission from the disaster management department and to submit a report to the honourable court by January 7. KMRC has submitted a report of a committee of its experts stating that tunnel boring could be resumed and that there was no fear of further accidents. In reply to which the court has asked KMRC to get the report validated by the state disaster management department in order to get necessary permissions before commencing the tunnel boring work.
