Director Shubhrajit Mitra's 'Devi Choudhurani' Takes a Global Leap, Set To Enter BAFTA And Academy Awards

In a groundbreaking move for Bengali cinema, director Shubhrajit Mitra's latest venture, 'Devi Choudhurani,' is making waves beyond borders, forging partnerships with the United States and England. The film has taken a significant stride towards international recognition by submitting entries for the prestigious BAFTA and Academy Awards.

Breaking new ground, 'Devi Choudhurani' is the first Bengali film to bring together the creative forces of three countries. The synchronized efforts across India, America, and England have positioned the film as a strong contender for both the BAFTA and Academy Awards, meeting the stringent criteria set for entries in these esteemed accolades.


Director Shubhrajit Mitra expressed his joy, stating that the collaborative effort of the 'Devi Choudhurani' team has opened doors to the possibility of earning recognition at BAFTA and the Academy Awards. The film's adaptation of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's historic novel has garnered attention for its unique production approach.

Starring actress Srabanti Chatterjee in the lead role of Devi Choudhurani, the film boasts a star-studded cast including Prosenjit Chatterjee, Subhasish Mukherjee, Arjun Chakraborty, Bibriti Chatterjee, Darshana Banik, Kinjal Nanda, and more.

Scheduled for release in 2024 across seven languages worldwide, the film has also undertaken shooting in diverse locations, including Birbhum, Jharkhand, Purulia, Bihar, and the outskirts of Kolkata.

Director Shubhrajit Mitra shared insights into the unique production aspects, emphasizing the use of large canvases for shooting scenes—a first in Bengali cinema. The film's journey has been marked by meticulous pre-production work over the past year, showcasing the commitment of the production team.

Mitra, known for his acclaimed work in 'Abhijatrik,' had previously made headlines in 2021 with the success of his film 'Abhijatrik,' the sequel to Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy, earning recognition in 27 international festivals. Now, as anticipation builds for the release of 'Devi Choudhurani,' the director is poised for another significant milestone in his filmmaking journey.
