Demolition plan for Tallah Bridge

The Government of West Bengal had earlier decided to pull down the Tallah Bridge situated in North Calcutta after it lost its load bearing capacity. The Government has now assigned the engineers of PWD (Public Works Department) to chalk out the demolition plan for pulling down the 57 year old structure. The PWD engineers have reported that a giant jaw crusher machine will be commissioned to demolish the Tallah Bridge in order to minimise the amount of dust released in the air and the vibration caused by the demolition. The demolition work is scheduled to begin from the first week of January. A PWD engineer said, “A jaw crusher works like a shark opening its jaws to gobble up concrete and steel. The machine produces much less vibration compared with more common crushing machines and releases negligible amount of dust in the air”. Apart from this, another reason for commissioning this giant jaw crusher is that this machine would speed up the demolition process. The engineer added, “The government wants to start work on the new bridge at the earliest. The faster the bridge is demolished, the earlier we will be able to start work on the new structure”. The Tallah Bridge will be closed for normal traffic from the night of January 4 following which the demolishing work will commence. A construction agency has already been awarded the contract for demolishing the structure of the Tallah Bridge and the agency has been instructed to dismantle the two approach roads to the Tallah Bridge within 15 days of commencement of the demolition process.
