Dasgupta and Co., Kolkata’s oldest bookshop, was founded in 1886, and is currently led by Arabinda Dasgupta, 71, the company’s most recent managing director. The long-running family business has weathered two world wars. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation recently granted its heritage status and listed it as Grade II.

With the advancement of technology and people using digital modes for money transactions, the accounts department on the second floor of Dasgupta and Co. was not coming to much use. And now this empty space will be used to transform the premise into a library. A dusty space measuring 2,000 sq ft (186 m2) that was once home to Dasgupta and Co.’s accounts department and tiffin room is being turned into a free library for students who can’t afford to buy books.

Here, you can get three benefits at once. You can sit and read books for free. There will be provision of tutorials for school-college students on various subjects.

Not everyone can afford to buy and read all the books. The boys and girls of the city also want to come to the store to check out various reference books on the same subject. The reading library is arranged for their convenience. If it is free, the lower-class students will greatly benefit. Mathematics, history, and various international relations professors have expressed interest in taking some tutorial classes free of charge. It will benefit the needy and talented students very much.

Counseling arrangements are being made to monitor the mental health of the students. According to Arvind Dasgupta, students often suffer from anxiety, depression, and anxiety due to the pressure of studies, career pressure, and excessive competition.
