Chandrayaan-3 went into space at a third of the cost of a Hollywood movie

Chandrayaan-3 was supposed to land on the moon in 2021. But Chandrayaan-3 was launched two years late. In December 2019, ISRO asked for 75 crore rupees for this mission. Currently, the whole country is waiting for the 23rd day of August. Chandrayaan-3 is scheduled to land on the lunar surface today. Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram lander, along with the Pragyan rover, will land near the moon’s south pole on August 23. Every Indian is waiting for this day.

ISRO has already released daily images taken by Chandrayaan-3. Chandrayaan-3 has been described as the most cost-effective mission compared to all previous Moon missions. The budget of the Hollywood film Avatar, released in 2009, was around Rs. 1970 crore. The total budget of Chandrayaan-3 was around 615 crore rupees. In other words, India has succeeded in launching Chandrayaan-3 at only one-third the cost of Avatar. So far, Chandrayaan-3 has cost the least amount of money. The latest lunar exploration mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), ‘Chandrayaan 3, was launched on July 14, 2023, and is expected to make a soft landing on the lunar surface on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at 18:04 hrs.

This first soft landing attempt will be made in the Moon’s south pole region.  Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-up mission to Chandrayaan 2 that aims to demonstrate India’s end-to-end capability in safe-landing and roving on the moon’s surface. Even though Chandrayaan-3 is more affordable than other space missions and even some Hollywood films, it is possible that the final price will exceed Rs 615 crore. In December 2019, ISRO reportedly sought initial financing for the mission in the amount of Rs 75 crore, of which Rs 60 crore would be used to cover costs for equipment, machinery, and other capital expenses.

The financial budget of the Chandrayaan-2 mission is Rs 978 crore. Out of this, Rs 603 crore is spent on the orbiter, lander, rover, navigation, and ground support network, and Rs 375 crore is spent on the Geostationary Satellite Launch System. The toughest challenge for scientists is the soft landing of the Vikram lander. The Vikram lander has reached very close to the moon. Now the real challenge is to find the right place and land him on the lunar surface at the right speed. This work has to be done from hundreds of thousands of kilometers away. This is a very difficult task for scientists.
