Belur Math President Swami Smaranananda Maharaj Passes Away At 95 Due To Age-Related Illness

In a solemn moment, the President of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, Swami Smaranananda Maharaj, breathed his last on Tuesday at 8:14 AM at the service institution of Ramakrishna Mission. Aged 95, he had been battling age-related ailments. Swami Smaranananda served as the 16th president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, taking on the responsibility on July 17, 2017, after the demise of Swami Atmasthananda.

Reports suggest that Swami Smaranananda has been admitted to a private hospital since January 29 due to health complications. Initially hospitalised for a urinary infection, he later developed septicemia and respiratory distress, eventually requiring ventilatory support. Additionally, he faced renal complications.

During his tenure at the hospital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited him to inquire about his health.

Born in 1929 in the Tanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, Swami Smaranananda lost his mother at a young age. He completed his schooling and pursued a diploma in commerce in Nashik in 1946. His spiritual journey commenced in Mumbai when he connected with the Ramakrishna Mission. He received initiation from Swami Shankarananda in 1952 and took monastic vows in 1956.

Swami Smaranananda dedicated 18 years to the Kolkata branch of Advaita Ashrama. He also served as the editor of the English journal "Prabuddha Bharata" for several years. In 1983, he became a governing body member of the Ramakrishna Mission and was later appointed as the head of the Chennai Ramakrishna Mission in 1991.

His demise leaves a void in the hearts of millions of devotees worldwide. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep sorrow at his passing, acknowledging his profound influence in spreading spiritualism globally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned his loss, highlighting Swami Smaranananda's unwavering commitment to spirituality and service.

Swami Smaranananda's legacy of compassion and wisdom will continue to inspire generations to come. His recent hospitalisation in Kolkata and subsequent demise mark the end of an era, leaving behind memories of his profound teachings and selfless service to humanity. May his soul rest in peace.
