Arabian Jasmine, the ancestor of ‘Bel Phul’

Not only that it is the national flower of Indonesia and the Philippines. Though the flower has Arabian in its name but is actually a native of this region. But why does this flower have Arabian in its name? Maybe because the perfumes of Arabia are famous for their fragrance! Shakespeare used a comparison of Arabic perfume in his play ‘Macbeth’.

The flower is known as ‘bel’ or ‘beli’ in Bengali, ‘mogra’ in Hindi and Arabian Jasmine is the common name. The scientific name of Arabian Jasmine is Jasminum sambac. It is cultivated in different countries to manufacture perfumes. This small flower is a powerhouse of a strong scent.
