An evening of fusion

Every continent has its own dance forms, each of which has its own intricacies and nuances. What makes a whole performance breath taking and mesmerizing is a unique blend of these dance forms and a synchronized collaboration on stage. An event which promised every bit of this magic was organized on 21st February at the prestigious G D Birla Sabhagar. The event was named “Speak - Rhythm in Feet”.

The name is apt as the event showcased a distinctive blend of Kathak and Tap Dance. These two dance forms are continents and ages apart, share their own stories of evolvement and struggle. These two dance forms were brought together through rhythm, poetry, storytelling, music, and dance. “Speak – Rhythm in Feet” featured talented Kathak artists such as Rina Mehta and Rachna Nivas from New York, along with dynamic tap dancers Michelle Dorrance and Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, also from New York. The quartet delivered sheer elegance and magic on stage. Acting as a bridge between tradition and innovation, history and progress, they intend to carry on the legacy of iconic artists such as Pandit Chitresh Das, Dr. Jimmy Slyde, and James Buster Brown. The dancers were richly complemented by leading Indian classical and jazz musicians. The audience were spellbound and mesmerized by the thrill and spirit of the performances.

Jugalbandi” in any form is highly appreciated by art loving audiences in Kolkata. And the performances didn’t disappoint any one. There were three major “Jugalbandi” performances – kathak and tap, Indian classical music and tap dance, and jazz and kathak. This event has been performed in leading cities across India, and everywhere they have been received with warmth and enthusiasm.
