To ensure the well-being of pilgrims at the Ganga Sagar Mela, an air ambulance dispatched from Kolkata came to the aid of a woman from Bihar who fell ill during her sacred journey.
Last Friday, a pilgrim from Bihar, identified as Sumitra Devi, experienced health complications amidst the bustling Ganga Sagar Mela. Having embarked on the pilgrimage for the sacred Makar Sankranti bath, Sumitra Devi suddenly fell ill amid the crowded festivities.
Prompt medical attention was provided as she was swiftly carried to a medical camp, where healthcare professionals diagnosed her with a transient ischemic attack, commonly known as a mini-stroke. This stroke occurred due to disrupted blood flow in the brain, attributed to high-pressure situations in densely packed crowds.
In a strategic decision to ensure immediate and specialised care, the local administration decided to transfer Sumitra Devi to Kolkata via air ambulance. The helicopter, arranged by the state government, airlifted her from the shores of the Ganga Sagar to M.R. Bangur Hospital in Kolkata, where she is currently receiving medical treatment.
This incident underscores the state government's commitment to prioritising health services during the annual Ganga Sagar Mela. Over the past few years, the government has deployed approximately 2,250 government buses and 500 private buses to facilitate pilgrim transportation. Additionally, a significant number of trains are operational, connecting various locations, including Sealdah.
To further enhance safety measures, the state government has ensured the availability of 100 ambulances, one air ambulance, and four water ambulances to swiftly respond to emergencies during the pilgrimage.
The proactive approach taken by the government in providing comprehensive healthcare and transportation services demonstrates their dedication to ensuring the well-being of pilgrims participating in the Ganga Sagar Mela.
