Actor Mithun Chakraborty And Singer Usha Uthup Receive Padma Bhushan, A Proud Moment For Bengal

In a prestigious ceremony held, renowned Bengali actor Mithun Chakraborty and singer Usha Uthup were honoured with the Padma Bhushan award by President Droupadi Murmu. This recognition comes as a testament to their outstanding contributions to the arts, particularly in the Bengali film and music industries.

Attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the event showcased the highest civilian honours bestowed upon 22 individuals, including 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan, and 110 Padma Shri awards, with representation from diverse fields and demographics. The list was unveiled by the government ahead of Republic Day, highlighting the diverse talents and achievements across various fields.

Apart from Mithun Chakraborty, four other Bengali luminaries were among the Padma awardees this year. They include Dukhu Majhi, an indigenous environmental activist from Purulia, and Chhau mask artist Nepal Chandra Sutradhar. Despite Sutradhar's passing in 2023, he will posthumously receive the honour.

The Padma Vibhushan category saw notable figures like former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, veteran actor Chiranjeevi, and classical dancer Padma Subrahmanyam being recognised for their exceptional contributions.

Expressing his elation, Mithun Chakraborty humbly shared that he never expected such recognition in his lifetime, underscoring his gratitude for the honor. He recounted the moment he received the unexpected call informing him of the Padma Bhushan, a surreal experience that momentarily rendered him speechless, as he had never aspired for it.

In a diverse array of talents and achievements, this year's Padma Awards celebrate the rich cultural tapestry and exceptional individuals who have left an indelible mark on society, reflecting the essence of India's spirit and excellence.
