Yadoon Mein Pancham

The music created by R. D. Burman known as Pancham still remains one of the most soulful songs enjoyed and hummed by many Indians. Two Kolkata based cultural forums ‘Takht’ and ‘Dakhiner Batayon’ will be enacting an 85-minute Broadway-style musical named ‘Yadoon Mein Pancham’, revisiting the popular classics of Burman. 20 actors will be enacting the musical interpreting the songs in a new way, keeping the original content intact.

Burman, the only son of one of the most celebrated music composer of India, Sachin Dev Burman, was a music director, who has contributed music in many Bollywood films. Initially, he worked as a music assistant in films like ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ (1958), ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’ (1959) and ‘Guide’ (1965) where his work was appreciated. As a music director, Burman worked in films like ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966), ‘Kati Patang’ (1970), ‘Hare Krishna Hare Rama’ (1971), ‘Caravan’ (1971) and ‘Masoom’ (1986). For ‘Masoom’ he received his 2nd Filmfare award for Best Music Director, the 1st one being for the film ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ in 1983.

The musical will feature 14 songs such as ‘Chala Jaata HoonChura Liya Hai TumneRimjhim Gire Sawan’ and Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge’, among others, in a plot-based narrative. The 14 songs were rearranged by Buddhadeb Ganguly. Among the two groups, ‘Dakhiner Batayon’ is a 13-years old group that specializes in singing among other activities. And the other is a group launched in 2014 that works with different genres of the art form. The script is written by Rishi Pandey, directed by Sangram Mukhopadhyay, costumes and lights coordinated by Takht group. The musical, ‘Yaadoon Mein Pancham’, will be performed at Uttam Mancha on 31st March, 6:30 pm onwards.
