Western Disturbance In Kolkata

Most of us love the winter season and we really don’t want the rain to ruin our plans. Well, that’s what’s happening in Kolkata and in most parts of West Bengal. But monsoon doesn’t arrive before the month of May. So has anyone wondered what this phenomenon is? Why does it rain during this time every year?

Well, this event is called the western disturbance which originates in the Mediterranean region. To keep the explanation simple, high-pressure area consolidates over Ukraine and its surroundings which send cold air from the poles to a region that has warm, moist air. This results in cyclogenesis and an eastward moving extratropical depression.
These western disturbances carry moisture from the Mediterranean Sea and bring moderate to heavy rain in the Indian Subcontinent.

This rain is necessary as it helps to grow Wheat.

Well, it might spoil your plan but because of this rain, the temperature drops down again and keeps the cold winter feeling alive for a few days before the hot summers set in.

Also, our mom finds an excuse to make Khichdi. Enjoying hot khichdi at home, while it rains outside has an entirely different feeling. So don’t be upset as this rain will last for a few days.
