West Bengal name change might affect car number plates

The West Bengal assembly has recently passed a resolution to change the name of the state to ‘Bangla’ from ‘West Bengal’. This bill passed by the state assembly is now in motion and requires final certification from the Central Government. After the final certification of the Central Government, which is more of a formality, the new name of the state would be “Bangla”, and that’s going to bring along a few changes. One such major change would be the change in existing registered number plates for vehicles. The current name of the state being West Bengal, the nomenclature for registration plates is currently “WB”, which is definitely going to change after the state is renamed.
However, it is not yet certain as to what the new series of the number plates would be. People are expecting ‘BA’ or ‘BG’ or ‘BL’ to be the new initials used on number plates, with most people guessing it to be ‘BA’ since it sounds the closest. If the West Bengal Government follows what the state of Telangana did after it was carved out of Andhra Pradesh, the existing registered plates bearing the initials “WB” need not be changed.
