West Bengal becomes fourth state for crossing reservation cap beyond 52%

After the union cabinet approved the amendment bill of 10% reservation quota to economically backward people in government jobs and in colleges, the West Bengal on Tuesday passed the same law of providing 10% reservation quota to economically backward people under general category in government jobs and educational institutes. While announcing the decision, West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said ‘There will be a 10 percent reservation for them in government service. However, those who are already been covered under SC, ST and OBC category will not be eligible. Details will be shared once the order is released, but in principle, Mamata Banerjee's cabinet has agreed to the proposal’.  The EWS will be 10% of the remaining 52% quota left, as in the overall reservation quota which is 48%, excluding the EWS, in which scheduled caste holds 22%, scheduled tribes hold 6%, backward classes hold 17% and disabilities holds 3%. Mamta Banerjee’s decision of adding 10% quota for ESW takes this beyond the supreme court cap because the supreme court ordered capping within 50%. After this West Bengal will be the fourth state to cross the 50% reservation cap. When asked by education minister what’s the difference between the union cabinet and west Bengal schemes of this law, he said once the order copy is published it will be clear to them what is the difference.
