Water Bodies's restoration to begin soon after Polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) will issue notification of the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls any day now and then the Model Code of Conduct will be put in place after that.

Taking that into consideration, the project management unit of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is getting all the relevant papers ready so that as soon as the election procedure is over, treatment of water bodies across the city can begin. This department looks after the renovation and restoration of water bodies and wetland areas of the city. In a recent meeting with officials concerned, member, mayor-in-council of the department Swapan Samadder said that work at several water bodies have already begun under the supervision of the state pollution control board but since a green signal from the urban development and municipal department is due, renovation and restoration of about 60-70 such water bodies is yet to begin. “Issuing of e-tender has to be done which would take about 20-25 days and thus as soon as the poll process ends we will start issuing work order for restoration of ponds and lakes. That is why paper works are being done in advance,” he said.

KMC sources said that soon department has to finalise under which head the government grants would be spent and that not even a single rupee should return unspent. Accordingly officials have pulled up their socks but non-availability of permission from the urban development department has posed to be an impediment so far.

A few months ago, Sammader had said that a detailed report should be prepared about the condition of all water bodies under the KMC. If need be a monitoring can be done with the help of drones. He had said that in the first round, no agency had participated in the tendering process so there will be a second round. “There will be no compromise in restoration of water bodies,” he said.
