VVPATs to be used in Bengal

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Sunil Arora had announced during his visit to the state that for the first time in West Bengal, VVPATs will be used in polling booths along with EVM machines. Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) are machines used during elections along EVMs to verify that the vote polled by a voter goes to the candidate he/she chose. It gives instant feedback to the voter confirming that his vote was cast to the candidate chosen. The Election Commission had decided to install these machines when the opposition claimed that the EVMs were at times tampered with. Sunil Arora along with the full Election Commission bench had recently visited the state to review polling preparations and conducted meetings with political parties, District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, nodal officers of Income Tax and Excise and Commercial tax departments.
