Unique punishment for repeat traffic offenders

In order to control repetitive traffic offenders, the government has come up with a unique punishment. The enforcement agencies will henceforth be allowed to put up the names and records of these offenders in the public domain who have a record of repeat traffic violation such as jumping signals, using mobile while driving, drunk driving, racing or blocking the way of emergency vehicles. To put this mode of punishment into effect, the government has made amendments in the Motor Vehicle Act, so that the government agencies can make these records public. The government will also impose higher fines along with extended jail time in some cases. The driving licenses of these habitual offenders might also get revoked. An official of the Road Transport Ministry said, “Largely, violations that fall under the dangerous driving category have been brought under this provision. We will make the rules before this provision is enforced. However, higher fine and penalties for these offenses will come to effect from September 1 (Sunday)”. Moreover, according to the new guidelines, these repetitive violators of traffic rules can also be assigned with compulsory community service.
