Tunnel boring machines used for E-W Metro to be retrieved

The tunnel boring machines which were used to dig the tunnels for the East West Metro project under the Hoogly river will be brought out from the underground tunnels where both of these machines operated for more than a year. These tunnel boring machines owned by a construction company Afcons have dug the 3.8 Km long corridor from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade and are to be taken out soon. The machines currently are lying 23m under the surface at Esplanade and rear portion of the machine will be pulled out first.  The owner of these machines ‘Afcons’ construction company has built the tunnels between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade. An engineer of ‘Afcons’ who’s involved in the project, said, “The preparations for retrieving the tunnel-boring machines are complete. The machines will be pulled out through a shaft built at Esplanade adjacent to the site where the East-West station is being built. A 160-tonne-capacity crane will be deployed to pull out the machines, each of which weighs 313 tonnes and has six components. The heaviest component is the front shield and it weighs 92 tonnes”. The engineers expect the retrieval process to be completed within a month. The boring machines once retrieved will be sent to the Nagpur facility of ‘Afcons’ for refurbishing.
