TRIFED asks State Govts. To Set Up Van Dhan Model Centres

The tribal cooperative marketing federation of India (TRIFED) has asked state governments to set up models of Van Dhan Vikas Kendra in order to explain how it works. The target is to set up 3,000 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VKDK) by March 31, 2020, to link 10 lakh tribal families to projects enabling value addition to forest production.

The Van Dhan Scheme is an initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and TRIFED that was launched on 14th April, 2018. It seeks to improve tribal incomes through value addition of tribal products.Setting up these centres is seen to be one of the largest self-help group-based entrepreneurship programme, which will be exhibited as short-term and long-term plan.

More than 660 VKDKs have been sanctioned for implementation that will cover almost 2 lakh tribal families. The Van Dhan models will come with detailed guidelines and each state will be give Rs 1 lakh to create these models. In order to supervise the state-wise execution of the VKDK models, TRIFED has joined hands with Indian Institute of Public Administration. IIPA teams will visit one state every month.

We feel monthly feedback is important instead of annual assessments. Even the idea behind setting up model VKDKs in prominent places across states is to drive home the point that this is doable. Moreover, each state will implement the projects in different ways based on these guidelines. The local tribal belt conditions and demands will guide project execution,” TRIFED MD Pravir Krishna said.
