Tram shop at Alipore Zoo

The Alipore Zoological Gardens is going to set up an extra tourist attraction for winter – a tram shop. Zoo authorities will be setting up a souvenir shop inside a tram to attract visitors and to promote the heritage of Bengal through trams. The zoo administration had earlier requested the state Transport department to provide them with a tram compartment for setting up of such a shop and the latter gifted it to the zoo. The State transport department has already delivered a bogey of a tram to the zoo and it is currently placed adjacent to the new entry gates. The zoo authorities will now set up the gift shop which will sell souvenirs for tourists and it is expected to be launched by early December. Asis Samanta, Director of Alipore Zoo said, "Souvenir shops are found in a number of zoos in the country. We are planning to set up such a shop. There will be a variety of items in the form of caps, t shirts, stickers etc. with the logo of our zoo and designs of animals. We are hopeful that the items will be appreciated by children and elders too".

N.S. Nigam, secretary of state Transport department said, "There were some trams lying with us which were not in running condition and had to be disposed of as scrap. The Zoo is a popular destination and so many people visit it all through the year. So when they approached us with the proposal of demonstrating the tram in an interesting manner we agreed to it and have given them one. If, somebody wants to promote the culture and heritage of Bengal through trams we are ready to do the same". The Alipore zoo attracts almost 36 lakhs visitors in a year and happens to be a popular winter tourist spot of the city.
