Training for drivers to ensure women’s safety

Kolkata Police has taken a great initiative to make the lives of women of this city safer. They will train the bus drivers, conductors, auto, app-cab and taxi drivers on gender sensitisation. This training will be a part of the Kolkata Police’s “Respect Women” movement. Murlidhar Sharma, joint CP (crime) stated, “we will be sensitising the transport workers on how to respect women and will cover all aspects of gender equality. A key concern area here will be how to make a woman comfortable while she is travelling.”

Every day several cases of assault and molestation on women on transportation systems get registered at the police station. Police do take action against them but still, these incidents seem to be never-ending. The movement, ‘Respect Women’ has been officially launched on Wednesday with the closing ceremony of KP’s ‘Tejaswini’ workshop. A Lalbazar officer said, “we are always ready to react immediately to any such distress call. But the men in uniform on the spot should take charge. This means reaching out to the women, registering a police complaint and even driving down to the nearest police station.”

A similar training programme was conducted by the Haryana Roadways, in which around 10,000 bus drivers and conductors took participation. Haryana Roadways’ training programme was under the initiative, ‘Safe Gaadi’.
