To the Thriving Young Woman, Do Not Compare Yourself to the Rest

If you try to correlate, it will only lead you to your gloom.

As women, we’re always scrutinizing ourselves and each other. We compare our looks, our clothing, our bodies, our jobs, our financial situation, and nearly everything else. But what you may not comprehend is that if you always compare, you’ll never be quenched with what you have and you’ll just grow bitter, because there will ALWAYS going be someone who seems to have it more perfected than you.

Isn’t it better to be thankful for what you have than to live in a constant state of despair?

It seems as if all of your friends are developing their lives at a rapid pace than you are. They’re renting apartments, getting married, and some are even having kids. Here you are, living with your parents, still in school, and working a part-time job.

We struggled with sitting on the sidelines, living vicariously through others and their undertaking. It seemed as if their lives are great, and were becoming someone bigger, fitting in with the “adult” life. It was hard for a while, not being about to fit in or relate to them and what they were doing.

You wanted so badly to be in their shoes, but you need to realize that your life is great.

As we get older and develop a stronger sense of self, knowing that comparing ourselves to others is NO longer necessary can be a very powerful and liberating concept. You do have many small triumphs along the way, and allow yourself to cherish and celebrate them. Even though you know you are young, it still feels as if you are not progressing at the same rate as those who you went to high school with. It will take you a while, and some soul-searching to realize that you are exactly where you need to be.

This isn’t supposed to be you, whining and complaining that you are in crisis, that your growth is slow – you are supposed to be a message for those who seemed to be stuck like you were. You should let them know it’s okay to wait and pursue different things. There is no need to rush anything in your life because good things will come to you when you need it most. You just need to have confidence in yourself and those who you know, you can surround yourself with because even though you're hoping and struggling to be those other women, I can tell you that they wish they could have a life like yours.

The biggest thing you need to take away from this is to focus on yourself. Comparing yourself to others is preposterous, especially when you're in the most tenacious and most complicated part of your life. Each woman is unique in her own way, and there will always be qualities that will make you special, so why get stuck on what you don’t have or self-sabotage your life unessential when it’s already arduous enough? Beauty, success, and all the rest come in different forms, so don’t burden yourself to live up to an ideal of perfection that you probably only created on your own. Don’t be so hard on yourself or on other women who you could be giving unrealistic prejudices by comparing them to others.

The next time you find yourself staring at that girl in the mall who just has way too gorgeous hair, or the woman carrying two Gucci bags at the same time, stop yourself and remember:

THERE’S ALWAYS A BIGGER BOSS LADY THAN YOU.

THERE’S ALWAYS SOMEONE WITH BETTER HAIR.

At the end of the day, we all have something wonderful and we are going to achieve more prosperity if, instead of comparing ourselves, we inspire each other to reach the goal we have in common: HAPPINESS!
