Tech intervention at govt hospitals

In the lines of upmarket diagnostic centres, now diagnostic reports from government hospitals will also be available on smartphones. The facility will soon be rolled out at Calcutta Medical College, SSKM, RG Kar and National Medical College and Hospital.

Health department officials said that in the first phase it will be made available at NRS and Bankura Sammilani Medical College and later on the service will be available at other medical colleges. Doctors at the Outdoor Patient Department (OPD) would prescribe the required tests to patients who would take the advise slip and go to the laboratory concerned and take a date on which the test would be done. In the second part after the test is done, patients have to wait in a long queue to receive the reports. In the new system, patient will take the advise slip and go straight to the pathological department concerned and as soon as they are given a date, their names would be registered, a copy of which would be given to the patient which would need to be produced on the day the test would be done.

After the test is done, the patient or his/her family member dont need to return to collect the report which often needs to be searched from bundles of papers. According to the new system, once the registration number is punched in, the report of the patient shows up in a second and a printout can be taken. Link of the report can also be shared with the patient through an sms. Once the link is clicked on, the report will open on the screen of the smartphone.

Medical College sources said that just like the outdoor patients, the facility will soon be accessible to indoor patients as well. In that case, just like it is done in private hospitals, reports would be sent to computers at different wards through LAN. Doctors will be able to look at those on screen. It will save a lot of paper, time and will be more convenient than bringing the reports physically to the wards concerned.

There had been instances when treatment process had been delayed owing to human errors in case of delivering pathological reports to the wards. Hospital authorities believe that the new process will put an end to that as well.
