State to get 15 more fire stations by March 2020

Flagging off 53 new fire engines at Bikash Bhavan in Salt Lake, state fire and emergency services minister Sujit Bose said on Saturday that other than the new fire stations that were being put up at Basirhat, Sainthia and Joynagar, there would be 15 more stations coming up across the state by the end of March 2020.

Bose said that the new fire engines would be commissioned at different existing fire stations whenever need be. He also said that of the new 15 fire stations two would be located at Sagar Islands and New Town. Lakhs of pilgrims visit Sagar every year and considering that it had been decided that work at Sagar would be completed as soon as possible. He added that after he became the fire minister he initiated fire audit and so far it had been done at 644 places including shopping malls, hotels and restaurants.

DG (fire) Jagmohan said that the upgraded fire fighting vehicles would increase the efficiency of tackling fire during an emergency and that the increased number of vehicles would be helpful in fighting fire at rural and far-flung spots of the state. He added that by the end of this year, the fire departments will introduce the use of robots and drones.

Of the fire engines inaugurated on Saturday, 30 were of 2500 litre capacity and mid-sized water tender equipped with a high pressure pump which is very useful for dousing the small and medium fire.

There were also 20 water browsers comprising 14,000-litre capacity tanks and high and low-pressure pumps. Experts said that these would be used against medium and large fire. Of these are two high-pressure hose reel and monitor of 3000-litre discharge capacity.

Besides, there are three which can carry 8000-litre water and 4000-litre foam.

Fire department officials said that an amount of Rs 16,71,93,600 had been spent for the procurement of the vehicles.
