South Calcutta areas won’t receive filtered water on June 12

Supply of filtered water will be disrupted on June 12 for large parts of South Kolkata since the Kolkata Municipal Corporation will be shifting a water supply line due to the construction works of the new Majherhat Bridge. The Municipal Corporation will be stopping the supply of filtered water at 10 am on June 12, according to Corporation officials. Areas like Chetla, the Harish Park area in Bhowanipore, Kalighat, Ranikuthi, Layelka, Golf Green and Garfa, situated in South Kolkata will be affected due to the shifting of the pipeline and disruption in the supply of water. Mayor Firhad Hakim said,

The PWD had requested us to shift a water pipeline to make way for the piling work of the proposed Majerhat bridge. We realized this work had to be done urgently The usual supply of filtered water will resume on June 13 morning.

The Majerhat bridge had collapsed last year on September 4 and the construction of a new bridge is currently on process by SP Singla Constructions, which has been engaged by PWD to carry out the construction. One of the pipelines which carry filtered water from Garden Reach waterworks in various parts of south Calcutta came in between the construction works and thus a part of that pipeline has to be diverted. A PWD official said,

If a portion of the pipeline is diverted for the piling work then the construction of the new bridge will not be affected. We are happy that the KMC has agreed to do it right now.
